Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management: A Deeper Look

Recently, we informed you about our three new programs that launched in early 2010, one of which is the new Master of Science in Human Resource Management (MSHRM). We’ve received a lot of positive feedback and interest about this program, so here’s some more detail about the program that you’ll want to know.

strayer11 300x200 Masters Degree in Human Resource Management: A Deeper Look Strayer University’s MSHRM will prepare you for advancement in Human Resource Management and the global business environment. In general, it will help you increase your industry knowledge, leadership skills and people skills.

The Concentrations

There are two concentrations you can choose from. The first, Human Resource Generalist concentration, focuses on building a global workforce, developing effective labor relations, measuring performance and productivity, and determining return on investment. You may be interested in this concentration if you are pursuing a career as a manager, director, or vice president in areas like Human Resource Operations or Compensation and Benefits.

The second concentration, Human Resource and Organization Development, focuses on key practices needed for developing the talent of your organization’s workforce. You may be interested in this concentration if you are pursuing a career as a manager, director, or vice president in areas like Learning and Educational Leadership or Training and Education.

Professors and Networking Opportunities

Strayer University’s HRM professors are HR industry professionals that will show you how to apply the professionally relevant skills and knowledge that you learn into the field. Depending on your location, you can even join a Strayer University SHRM student chapter, where you can participate and benefit from seminars, conferences, and networking events to help enhance your HR educational experience.

Do You Have Test Anxiety?

Do you stress out before a test? It is natural to get nervous on such an occasion, especially after hours of studying and preparation. But too much stress can keep you from doing well. If anxiety interferes with your studying or your test taking abilities, you may have test anxiety.

If you do have test anxiety, you may experience some of these:

Difficulty getting started when attempting to study
You get distracted easily
Low expectations for success
Headaches, nausea, tension, etc., when taking a test
You can’t remember things or have difficulty organizing your thoughts

You can do something about test anxiety. It doesn’t always have to be a struggle!

Test Taking Tips:

Use good study techniques.
Maintain a positive attitude
Be well rested and well fed
Stay relaxed and don’t panic
Take your time; don’t rush to get the test done
Analyze your results when you get the test back; think about what you can differently the next time

College Basics: Studying Skills 101

study College Basics: Studying Skills 101 Earning a degree is a great opportunity to start expanding your knowledge base and prepare yourself to further your career. But with everything you have going on in your life, learning new things and building study skills may not be as easy as you’d like. To ensure that you get the most out of your education, establishing good study habits is the key to success.

Knowing how to absorb and recall information you learn will ensure you really get the most out of your classes.

Here are a few tips for you to remember when you are studying for your courses:

1. Vary your study activities. Reading may not be enough, so change it up with group discussions or hands on work.

2. Keep organized. Knowing what and where the information is will make for easy reference.

3. Review materials regularly to avoid cramming.

4. Transfer what you’ve learned into your own words and examples.

5. Use note cards to master new or difficult concepts and to help commit things to memory. Repetition is key.

6. Discover your key productivity periods. Do you work better in the morning or at night? Do you like to listen to music or study in a quiet space?

7. Look for solutions. If you don’t understand the material, go beyond just re-reading. Ask a fellow classmate or a teacher for help.

8. Take breaks. Long sessions of studying can do more harm than good if you aren’t taking a breather every now and then.

Strayer Grows Again: Texas Campus Opening!

Throughout this upcoming year, Strayer University continues to expand, furthering its campus footprint for adult education options throughout the country. In addition to the new campus Strayer added in Miami, Florida, we have added another in Texas: a first for Strayer University.

The Central Austin Campus, located at 8501 N. Mopac Expressway, Suite 100, Austin, TX 78759, will cater to the greater Austin metropolitan area. It opened February 8, 2010 helping Strayer further expand westward. This campus will begin offering courses in the upcoming Spring Quarter. To see a list of programs available, click here.

Test Taking Tips: GRE or GMAT

To qualify for admission to a graduate program at Strayer University, it is possible you will need to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). This requirement is necessary only if your undergraduate grade point average fell below a 2.75 during the final half of credits for your degree program.

If you are preparing to take these exams, here are some helpful tips for preparation:

1. Practice Time Management

Time management is important when studying. Plan out a schedule when you are going to study so that you know when to sit down and go over your materials. Make sure to take breaks so that you don’t overload yourself with too much information.

Having all the right materials will help you to get the most out of study sessions. Make sure to have all the right books, practice tests, note cards, or whatever else you might need before you start studying. This eliminates any distractions or interruptions during your study sessions.

3. Study In Advance

Studying well before the test gives an obvious advantage by allowing yourself more time to learn the material. It also eliminates stress you may have from trying to cram at the last minute.

4. Take a Prep Course

If you are really serious about going to school, taking a prep course isn’t a bad idea. It will help you focus your studies and will give you the resources you need to succeed, like having instructors who can answer any questions you may have about the test.

5. Know the Test

Being prepared is important, so understanding the test is key. Take a few practice tests to become familiar with the format and style. Being comfortable is the first step towards a good score.
