Going back to school can be a challenge.  Here are ten tips for returning to school that will help ensure proper time management and overall success.

1. Create a list to budget all your supplies, including a computer, software, study supplies, childcare and gas for travel.

2. Determine how you will pay for school. Will it be through student loans, employer assistance or money from your savings? Work hard to succeed because dropping out or failing classes will cost more money.

3. Prepare to be flexible in how you take classes, study and do routine chores.

4. Develop a support system at home and work.

5. Prepare to be inconvenienced today, so you can live a more convenient life in the future.

6. Be realistic in choosing your academic program. Try to match your interests with your aptitudes.

7. Register for the next term’s classes as soon as registration opens. This will serve to keep you on track for your degree and motivate you to focus on the future.

8. Determine your preferred learning style. Are you more comfortable reading textbooks or listening to a lecture? Do you require hands-on experience to internalize a concept? Is repetition important?

9. Make a study plan. Utilize your school’s tutoring, counseling and career advice resources. Have a plan for childcare during study times.

10. Start slowly. Don’t overwhelm yourself. Take one course at first to get a handle on the routine before you add more to your school load.
