Balance and Children

Many Strayer University students  balance raising children while earning a degree.  Check out these tips to help you manage both your classes and your kids.

  • As with your significant other, communication is equally important with your children. If you are a single parent, communication is critical.
  • Help your children understand the importance of your education to you and to them.
  • Let the children know when you need quiet time and establish rules for when you are on your computer or engaged in school work.
  • Bring your children to your campus and give them a tour. Introduce your children to your favorite professors and staff.
  • Let the children know how important their help is in helping you around the house. Make a list of chores that will be their responsibility.
  • Post schedules, including yours, so there are no surprises, especially during stress times.
  • Make sure your children do not resent your school time. If your child is receiving special recognition at school or church, or is in a performance, and the event is in conflict with your class, discuss the conflict in advance with your professor. While you are still responsible for the coursework, your professor should be able to assist you in working out an alternative to the missed class time.

Father and Daughter
Include your children in your education when you can. Depending on their age:

  • Do your homework and study together. That way you can both develop healthy study habits.
  • Have the children read over your papers and offer suggestions.
  • Let them help in some of your academic choices.
  • Give your children Strayer University pens, notebooks, clothing, or other Strayer University paraphernalia. Let them share in your pride and let them brag about you to their friends.
  • Take them to the library with you.
