Back to School Economics 101

For most people the cost of higher education can be a challenge. The majority of people only focus on the larger considerations of attending school: loans, scholarships, grants, etc. But simply keeping track of your spending and sticking to a budget can save you a lot during your college career. Here are a few tips on keeping track of your money and spending wisely.

Set and Stick to a Budget

Create a budget based on your income, monthly bills and expenses. Once you’ve created a realistic budget, stick to it. Don’t spend money you haven’t accounted for, even on little things.

Cut out the Extras

If you’re working and going to school, chances are you’ll be eating on-the-go a lot. That’s a surefire way to spend a lot of extra cash without noticing it. Pack a lunch and snacks from home to take with you instead of eating out. And be sure to eliminate unnecessary expenses if things look like they’re getting too tight. Make coffee at home instead of getting it on the way to work or school.

Buy During Back-to-School Season
Office superstores and big-box retail chains drastically lower prices around back-to-school time. Stock up on school supply essentials for the whole year during these sales, you’ll pay a fraction of the price you would later on in the year.
