Many adults want to return to school, but it can be a challenge to choose a major. Here are some things to consider as you make your decision.
Pick something that interests you. Your major will define the curriculum you study over the next few years so be sure the subject matter won’t have you snoozing in class.
Consider what you’re already good at. Do math and science come naturally to you? Do you prefer English and history? Being familiar with your strengths will help you choose a major with a curriculum wherein you can succeed.
Choose a broad major. Declaring a major should not mean picking something so specific it defines your future career. A general major will allow you to have a wide variety of career paths. Just remember the downside; once you do choose a specific career path based on that major you may need more specific job training. But broad majors improve your general education which will be valuable for years to come.
Get some experience. It’s always good to spend some time experiencing work in the field of study you’ve chosen or plan to choose. If you can’t get a job, do some volunteer work, or try to get an internship in your area of interest. This time can often fuel you to keep going, or steer you in a different direction based on your experience.
